ART DÉCO

déco (arts déco) Termine usato per designare lo stile diffuso in Europa e negli Stati Uniti dagli anni 1920, caratterizzato da forme classiche e misurate, di gusto modernista, geometrico e prezioso. Giunto a grande diffusione con la Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes, tenuta a Parigi nel 1925, e perciò detto anche Stile 1925, il d. si affiancò alle ricerche razionaliste, che si sarebbero affermate poi nel secondo dopoguerra.

Il d. rappresentò una risposta alla necessità dell’invenzione di uno stile ‘moderno’ nelle arti applicate, posta dall’esigenza dei mercanti francesi di riportare a livello europeo la produzione di mobili e oggetti d’uso che, dopo l’esaurimento dell’art nouveau, era tornata alla stanca imitazione degli stili storici.

Soprattutto per merito del sarto P. Poiret, noto per le sue rivoluzionarie collezioni di moda illustrate da disegnatori come Erté, P. Iribe e G. Lepape, furono introdotti in Francia nuovi criteri di progettazione e di organizzazione del lavoro, seguendo il modello di fortunate iniziative straniere come la Wiener Werkstätte austriaca, fondata da J. Hoffmann nel 1903, e il Werkbund tedesco. Sezioni speciali per l’arredamento, dirette da personaggi quali M. Dufrène e P. Follot, furono aperte presso i principali magazzini di Parigi: Printemps, Galeries Lafayette, Bon Marché e Louvre. Lo stile nato da questi laboratori risultava dall’innesto delle moderne tendenze internazionali sulla tradizione francese: un classicismo modernista, geometrico e antinaturalistico, a conoscenza della lezione cubista nella semplificazione delle forme e nell’uso di linee spezzate. Elegante, accurato, prezioso anche nella scelta dei materiali, il nuovo stile influenzò la produzione di mobili, lampade, stoffe, tappezzerie, ceramiche, vetri, gioielli, manifesti e libri.

A un gusto d. può essere ricondotto anche il repertorio di forme e di immagini diffuso negli stessi anni nell’architettura, e che aveva le sue premesse nelle opere di maestri come C.R. Mackintosh, P. Behrens, J.M. Olbrich, e soprattutto nel Palazzo Stoclet di J. Hoffmann a Bruxelles (1905): ne sono costitutivi l’accentuato verticalismo, le cornici a gradini e a segmenti curvilinei, le ampie spaziature nelle facciate, una decorazione geometrica, con fregi compatti di fiori stilizzati, rose, fontane zampillanti ecc. Fra i più cospicui esempi di tale architettura, particolarmente rappresentata negli USA, è il Chrysler building di W. Van Alen (1930) a New York. Al d. si avvicinarono in Italia disegnatori, decoratori e architetti, come S. Tofano, M. Dudovich, L. Cappiello, A. Mazzucotelli, U. Giusti, Gio Ponti, F. Nonni e altri.

IL LIBERTY

With the name of Liberty means a vast artistic movement that, from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century,

especially interested in the architecture and the applied arts. This was an international phenomenon, and took different names

depending on the country in which it arose. In France took the name of "Art Nouveau" in the name of Germany

"Jugendstil" in Austria was known as the 'Secession' in Spain 'Modernism' in Britain

modern style << >>. In Italy this movement came late and was initially known as "Flowers"

then to take the most well known name of "Liberty" from the shop of a dealer in oriental objects in London,

Arthur Lasenby Liberty. The Liberty was born in close correlation with the advance of industrial society and the

rejection of historical styles of the past in the architecture of that period provided the elements of morphology

design: it represented, therefore, the first way in which the company sought to give industrial aesthetic. the

Liberty sought inspiration in nature and in plant forms, creating a new style, totally original

than those then in vogue. The distinctive characteristics of Liberty became the pronounced linearity of the application

asymmetry and the decorative elegance. The line was taken as an expression of power and dynamism, that is,

as a symbol of vitality behind this taste was a strong belief in progress, in the future, in

"New". It soon became the style of the new emerging bourgeoisie. It is founded on the concept of consistency

style and design of form and function. By adopting the new techniques of industrial production, and

new materials such as iron, glass, and concrete, in fact the Liberty arrived for the first time to the

definition of a new project: the planning we call industrial design.
